Muhammad Irfan bin Mohamed Zaini was twelve years old when a film crew arrived in Malaysia to shoot a Tamil blockbuster — and walked away with a small role that would quietly set the course of his life.

Born on 5 June 1995 in Kuala Lumpur, Irfan first stepped in front of a camera as a child, cast as the younger brother of Trisha Krishnan's character in Vijay's Kuruvi (2008). The experience left an impression that outlasted childhood — but the path back to acting was not immediate. Irfan completed his studies, earning a degree in International Business and Marketing, before returning to performance in 2014.

What followed was a long, deliberate climb across two industries at once. Building a career in Malaysian television and film while pursuing opportunities in Tamil cinema meant years of travel between Kuala Lumpur and India, auditions that led nowhere, and — by his own account — being misled more than once by people posing as industry contacts. He kept going anyway, working steadily across Malay- and Tamil-language film and television through the late 2010s and early 2020s.

The persistence paid off. In 2024, Irfan returned to Tamil cinema on a far bigger stage, appearing in The Greatest of All Time alongside Vijay — the same star whose film had given him his start sixteen years earlier. A year later, his performance as Malik in Blood Brothers: Bara Naga brought him nationwide recognition in Malaysia. By 2026, he had returned to the screen with Vijay a third time in Jana Nayagan, and taken his first lead role in a Malay-language feature with Terbang — playing a character inspired by rally world champion Karamjit Singh.

Today, Irfan Zaini moves between Malay and Tamil productions, film and television, in front of the camera and occasionally behind the microphone as a host — an actor whose career reads less like a straight line than a series of returns, each one bigger than the last.
